Frequently asked questions

I have never fished for walleye or perch

We encourage and embrace first time anglers to this wonderful species of fish. All of our customers will be given all the information needed to be successful and we encourage you to ask as many questions as you want.

How will we be fishing

There are multiple tactics that we will use depending on what and where we are fishing. In the spring we almost exclusively Vertically jig, a very easy technique to master using our rods that our custom made for us, specifically for jigging the Detroit river. We will transition to Lake Erie trolling planer boards, dipsey divers, inline weights, tru-trips, dead sticks etc. We Vertically fish for perch in late summer and fall using live bait and custom perch rigs.

What will we catch

We always are targeting Walleye or perch, As I cannot guarantee specific species, we frequently catch other species. Smallmouth and largemouth Bass, Northern Pike, Musky, Steelhead, White bass, Drum, crappie, sturgeon and even the rare Salmon.

What fishing license do I need

All river charters will only require a Michigan Fishing License. Lake Erie varies on the time of year as to where we will want to fish. Sometimes Ohio will be better and then you will want an Ohio license. I will be in contact prior to your trip to suggest what area will produce the best fishing opportunities. Both the Michigan and Ohio License can be purchased online and at local bait shops.

  • Michigan online fishing License: www.michigan.gov/dnr
  • Ohio Online Fishing License: www.ohio.gov/dnr

What should I bring

In order to be prepared for your trip, it is suggested you dress accordingly for the weather forecast. We also recommend sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, hats any food or beverages you want and any medication you may need prior to returning to port. Lake Erie fishing may require you to take motion sickness medicine prior to arrival if you are prone to motion sickness.

What kind of boat will we be on

We will be fishing on a Triton 216 Fishunter, powered by a 300hp Mercury Pro XS. We have all modern electronics from Lowrance, Minnkota, Jensen and Cobra. All gear and tackle are maintained and top quality for every charter.

How long does a trip last

A typical trip will be 6hrs dock to dock or until we catch our limit. We try to put our clients not only on quantities of fish, but we are always in search of quality. We will run as far as need be to get you on a trophy.

Can you accommodate children

Absolutely! At Hook And Leader Sportfishing we always welcome and encourage young anglers to the wonderful sport. The future of these fisheries depends on young anglers. Come fish with us and make it a family event.
